Chapter 13

After a long flight of dangerously steep stairs, Lucian finally arrived back at the top of the canyon. Though sweaty and splashed with a bit of blood from the numerous monsters he helped slay, he was no worse for wear than when he fell from the cliff edge nearly two hours prior.

The same could be said for Aelia, though the dark elf girl was covered in far more blood than Lucian. Though she carried a bow, she often found herself embroiled in melee, using her shortsword to cut down monsters with precision.

The two of them took note of the grand archway that the Lord of Craghollow had built near the steps. Those who stepped beyond knew that the trip down the staircase would be a perilous one. But returning through the same arch after many treacherous battles was often met with acknowledgement beyond that of most other hunting grounds.

Seeing the human and dark elf walk through that archway, both soldiers and citizens of Craghollow showed their respect. Normally, Lucian would have likely caused quite a stir. But the people gathered had at least some understanding of the situation. And the reason for that was none other than the group that met him just beyond the arch.

“So they’ve returned,” Druthyr said, looking them up and down.

“See!” Teflyn waved her arms around. “We told you they’d be fine!”

“A human surviving the canyon will become quite a tale. No doubt many dark elves will seek to outdo you in the coming months to prove a point.”

Lucian shrugged. “Those who do so and survive deserve all the merit they can earn. Those monsters down there are quite fearsome.”

“Yet you don’t look injured in the slightest.”

“I had a good guide.” He looked to Aelia.

The tension returned, with Druthyr frowning at the dark elf girl he’d been chasing all day. But Aelia didn’t mind his scowl, meeting him with her usual uncaring expression.

“Your companions explained why you sought Aelia without me,” Druthyr said. “You believed that you could convince her to return the medallion, as long as you had the chance to speak.”

“That’s right. And we had two hours together, so I’d say that’s more than enough time to find out if my plan worked.”

“Did it?”

“I’ll let the girl herself tell you.”

Aelia eyed Druthyr, but she simply watched him without opening her mouth. After a few seconds of silence, she moved her gaze to someone else. Emilia.

“First, I want to hear what she was going to say before we were interrupted. After that, I’ll decide.”

“Okay.” Emilia’s soft voice revealed that her berserked state had already run out. “Aelia, five years ago, someone showed up at my little village. She was odd, with strangely discolored and pale skin, along with purple hair. And her ears were long. Much longer than anyone else’s. That woman stayed at my home for three years, and while she was there, she taught me a form of swordsmanship that I had never heard of.”

Emilia pulled at the katana on her waist.
